Jiu-jitsu tournament rules cheat-sheet

I have first tournament in few days and did not have time to go to one of those seminars for rules. Can anybody give me simple break down of stuff I need to know - I am competing as a fresh blue belt.

Start with points:

4 points – for top mount, back grab (back mount)

3 points – passing the guard

2 points – take downs, sweeps and knee on the belly

In addition you can play game of advantages and penalties they just add up.

-1, -2... - penalties

1, 2, 3... – advantages

Also you can not get new points for a position where you got points previously, if you change position and then come back to it like for example putting knee on the belly and off few times.

Also you will not get points if you get position while in a submission like if you mount guy and your head is still in a guitine, or one leg is still locked somehow (need to put them both to the floor). You need to do clean position.

It is hard to see what is referee doing while fighting but if you do you can know what happened by the way referee is moving his hands. For example: for points referee will raise his hand with armband matching color of your gi or belt. Advantage is sweeping outward movements and penalty with his hands one over the other with both fists closed (can follow with points). If he crosses armed and points at you you are disqualified.

Stuff you can not do at your level that will get you kicked out are mata leo with foot, slam fest from guard, leg locks and heel hooks, cervical neck cranks, biceps and calf lock and scissors takedowns.

Watch this video for exact movements:

Also good to know, if you run out of ring avoiding submission, you will be disqualified by technical foul. If you do it to avoid sweep you will loose 2 points.

Biting, hair pulling, putting fingers into the eyes or nose of one’s opponent, kicking in the manhood, punch with fist, feet, knee, elbow or head punch are all disallowed and you will be DQed.

On smaller stuff they will warn you first, then give advantage to opponent then give him 2 points and if it happened for 4 times you are DQ. These include (and are not limited to) running randomly out of ring, taking off kimono or any other kind of stalls and tactics to avoid fight.

Also cut your nails, wash gi and if you have hippy hair keep it tight. Gi has to be right size, with sleeves to wrist and not torn.

Hope this helps - good luck on your tournament.

i have see him advertise seminars before Worlds, Pan Ams and other competitions. we happen to have a lot of newbies at our seminar, and we didn't delve deeply into the 50/50 guard and scoring, and some of the other more subtle aspects of the intricate BJJ scoring system
